Fatfree Vegan Recipes

Vegan Choices in Jackson, MS, Restaurants

It can be a real challenge for a vegan to eat out in Jackson!  This is a very subjective list of restaurants that have vegan and vegetarian options.  Please use this list as a starting point, but do not rely on it to make sure your meal is vegan.  Always check with your server about the ingredients and describe in detail what you want (or don't want!)  Often the dishes mentioned below are not on the menu and have to be special ordered or at least altered from how they appear on the menu.

If you live in the Jackson area and know of any restaurants with vegan dishes, please send information to vegan AT veganconnection DOT com. Thanks to David C. for providing additional information!

 = Highest recommendation

Aladdin, 730 Lakeland Dr, 601- 366-6033.  Middle Eastern; especially good hummus and baba ganoush.

Bravo Italian Restaurant, 4500 I-55 N., 601-982-8111: Has a vegetarian plate with grilled vegetables and white bean hummus or polenta.  Very good.  The Vegetable Tower--hold the goat cheese (ask for olives on the side as replacement)--is great.   Good eggplant dish.  Entrees around $12.00. (This review is old; call to make sure of veg items before going.)

Cool Al's, 4654 McWillie Drive,  601-713-3020.  Absolutely the best veggie burgers, in several different varieties (my favorite is the West African Veggie Burger).  See the large vegetarian section of their online menu.  But beware: The service here is terrible; you may wait an hour or more for a simple order!

Hal and Mal's, 200 S. Commerce Street, 601-948-0888: Great place to hang out.  Only vegan meal is a portabella burger, but the special black bean tamale appetizer is vegan and delicious--and on the spicy side.  (Be careful, though; the regular tamale on the menu is not vegetarian.  Be sure to specify the black bean version and check carefully that it isn't the meat version before you bite!)

High Noon Cafe, 2807 Old Canton Road, 601-366-1513: Jackson's only vegetarian restaurant, part of Rainbow Whole Foods Grocery.  Good food. (Be sure to go on Fridays for the Seaside Cakes!)  Open for lunch on weekdays, 11-1:30.  (NOTE: Recently they may have started serving non-vegan dishes, so check to make sure of ingredients before ordering and specify vegan cheese when you order.)

Ruchi India, 862 Avery Blvd., Ridgeland, MS-39157, 601-991-3110: Lots of vegetarian options; ask for them made without butter (ghee), and they will be happy to oblige.

Keifer's Restaurant, 705 Poplar Blvd., 601-353-4976.  Middle-Eastern type food.  Vegetarian sandwiches, such as falafel, which can be made vegan with the omission of the standard sauce.

Little Tokyo Japanese Restaurant, 876 Avery Blvd, 601-991-3800.  Has several types of vegetarian sushi.  Ask that mayonnaise-based sauce be left off asparagus rolls and any others that normally come with it.

McAlister's Deli: A chain restaurant with several locations in the Jackson area.  Several vegetarian options which can be made without cheese, including baked potatoes, sandwiches, and chili.

Mediterranean Grocery and Cafe, 6554 Old Canton Road, 601-956-0082:  Pick up or eat in delicious hummus, tabouli, baba ganoush, falafel, and more.  Open for lunch and dinner. Call for times.

Mellow Mushroom, 275 Dogwood Boulevard, Flowood, MS 39232-8605, (601) 992-7499. The only place in town (besides High Noon) to get pizza with vegan cheese, and it's delicious, piled high with vegan toppings and melty cheeze.

Pan-Asia, 720 Harbor Pines Dr, Ridgeland, MS 39157, (601) 956-2958: Tofu appetizer, stir-fry bar (where you choose your own ingredients), Buddha’s delight.  A little on the expensive side for a veggie stir-fry, but good food and nice atmosphere.  Have the server tell you which sauces/dishes are truly vegetarian.  Can be done with whole grain noodles or without noodles (just extra veggies).

Sal & Mookies, 565 Taylor Street, Jackson, MS 39216, (601) 368-1919.  Let me say from the start that it's ridiculously overpriced and there's often a long wait.  Nothing vegan on the menu as written, but you can order a "New York-style" pizza with whatever you want on it or get a portabella burger or eggplant panini and have them hold the cheese. Check about the tomato sauce on pizzas: rumor is that it has cheese in it.  Good atmosphere on the patio/deck.

Spice Avenue, 4711 I-55 N Frontage Rd, Jackson, MS 39206,  (601) 982-0890: Formerly part of a grocery store, this recently revamped restaurant serves very good Indian food.  Vegetarian section on the menu; ask which dishes contain butter/ghee.  Lunch combos come with side dishes and allow you to choose two dishes.  Spicing is inconsistent; once asked for "medium" and it tasted almost unseasoned!

Thai House, 1405 Old Square Rd, 601-373-8154: Probably the strangest Thai food I've ever tasted (and I've tasted a lot), but it's the only game in town.  Ask for tofu instead of meat and be sure to get them to omit the fish sauce.  But warning, their "tofu" is actually some weird meat analog from a can.

Two Sisters' Kitchen, 707 N. Congress St., 601-353-1180: Home-style buffet, open only for lunch.  Has a vegetable-only option that includes beans, rice, grits, and salad.  Unlike most southern restaurants, Two Sisters' cooks the beans and vegetables without meat fat.   Current information is that all the legumes (beans, black-eyed peas) and many of the vegetables are cooked with meat. Some side dishes are vegan, such as grits and corn, but you still pay a ridiculously high full price even if that's all you eat.
